Fjordland National Park
Created in 1952, Fjordland is the largest national park in New Zealand, and one of the largest in the world. Fjordland National Park is also the largest area of wilderness in New Zealand. This value was set aside as early as 1904, when the land that later became national park was set aside. There are only three roads in the park (and a single one with public access), and only a few tracks, although three of the country's Great Walks (the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler tracks) are located within its boundaries.
Activities
- Take a spectacular scenic flight over Fjordland National Park - either fixed wing or floatplane. View crystal clear lakes, glacier carved fiords and endless snow clad mountains.
- Take the two and a half hour trip to Te Anau Caves and glow-worm grotto on the edge of Lake Te Anau. These caves are geologically active - quite unique in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Cruise around Milford, Doubtful, Dusky or Breaksea Sounds. The pristine forest, sheer rock walls and tumbling waterfalls are a breathtaking sight. Local inhabitants include bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and Fiordland crested penguins.
Adventures
Sea and lake kayaking is an active way to explore Fiordland in a small, personalised group. Several specialist companies offer a range of kayaking trips, including overnight trips to six-day adventures
Food
The culinary highlight for this region would be dining alfresco on the edge of Lake Te Anau - try fine New Zealand lamb or cervena (New Zealand venison), perfectly prepared with maybe a hint of Tuscany or an Asian influence.
Currency
New Zealand's unit of currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZ$). Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at banks, some hotels and Bureau de Change kiosks, which are found at international airports and most city centres. All major credit cards can be used in New Zealand. Travellers Cheques are accepted at hotels, banks and some stores.
